ICF - Insulating Concrete Forms

A guide to Insulated Concrete Forms

Insulating Concrete Forms, or ICF, building blocks are partially composed of a mixture of foam, plastic, wood or cement buildings. ICF units are assembled and fill the internal channels of the blocks by reinforcing steel and concrete. ICF finished concrete walls form a strong unit that effectively insulates against heat and noise. Although specific designs vary between manufacturers, all ICF units belong to one of a relatively small assortment of types according to the arrangement of the interior cavity.

Flat slab

ICF flat slabs consist of parallel "walls" ICF-forming material. Therefore, the internal cavity of flat slab ICF construction forms a continuous, vertical concrete slab. Essentially a monolithic concrete slab, flat slab ICF construction is generally the strongest type of ICF construction. The wall thickness of the flat slab remains constant around the entire structure, facilitating the installation requirements of some finishing materials such as doors and windows.

Grid

The inner cavity of a grid ICF system forms a web like series of interconnected horizontal and vertical channels. Also it called a system waffle ICF, ICF construction results in a grid that is partially finished concrete wall and partly ICF foam material. Therefore, building finishing materials openings such as windows and doors requires more planning than with ICF flat slab consistent. ICF grid units, however, usually require less concrete and rebar units’ flat slabs.

Post and Beam

Hidden behind its foam liner, the inner cavity of ICF units and beam forms a concrete structure similar to a traditional wood framed house. Post and Beam ICF units consist of several vertical channels topped with a single horizontal channel. With relatively large spaces between each inner column, post and beam ICF units generally require less concrete. Foam large gaps between the concrete columns of a unit post and beam potentially expose the finished wall to increased moisture and air infiltration.

ICF Building Systems

ICF units are available in systems panels, planks and building blocks. Panel systems usually form a flat slab cavity. Panel systems are large and require extensive tied reinforcements and assembly. Plank system units are lightweight, ICF generally rectangular pieces. Unlike panel systems that require preassembly, bulletin board systems are provided with connectors allowing connecting builders separated during stacking units. Systems block consists of pre-formed blocks construction, often shaped to create a cavity grating. The ICF blocks are stacked as the building block of a massively difficult to handle and are connected via braces or expanding foam jets.
